CAPA November Monthly Meeting 

 

"Psychopharmacology Update and RxP in Texas"

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: 

Dr. Grothues will provide a useful summary of the most commonly used medications for treatment of depression, anxiety, mood disorders, and ADHD, including treatment-resistant depression, recommended adjunctive therapies, and sleep aids. She will highlight the newest medications of the past decade and older agents still frequently used. In addition, she will briefly discuss the training of prescribing psychologists and the current state of RxP efforts in Texas and across the nation. Handouts will be provided for use in your everyday practice.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  1.  Provide an overview of the newest psychopharmacological approaches.
  2. Increase participant’s understanding of psychopharmacology and use in everyday practice.
  3. Provide information regarding the prescriptive authority movement in the US and Texas.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Grothues is a Licensed Psychologist in private practice in Dripping Springs. She attended Texas A&M University and obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1993. After completing her internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, she worked as Assistant Professor at

the University of Texas at Tyler, from 1995-2002. During this time she sought additional training in psychopharmacology and earned a Post-Doctoral Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychopharmacology from the California School of Professional Psychology in 2000, a program held in Texas in association with Texas A&M University.

Dr. Grothues has been in practice for over 25 years and treats older children, teens, and adults, including older adults and couples. Most of her population involves treatment of anxiety, depression/mood disorders, OCD, ADHD and other disruptive behavioral disorders, and adjustment disorders. She uses a cognitive-behavioral approach in therapy and tends to be active and directive with collaborative, measurable goals.

Dr. Grothues has also been involved in the Texas Psychological Association (TPA) for the past 20 years and member of the American Psychological Association for over 30 years. She has served on the TPA Board of Trustees and was TPA President during the 2017 Sunset year, testifying multiple times in front of the Sunset Commission and during the legislative sessions of 2015, 2017, and 2019. She currently serves on the TPA Legislative Committee, the Grassroots Committee, Business of Practice Committee, and serves as co-chair of the TSBEP Monitoring Committee. In addition, she is a member of the TPA RxP Workgroup and has made multiple presentations providing updates on psychopharmacology to Texas psychologists, including at the most recent 2019 convention. She takes an active role monitoring the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and promoting legislation that supports psychologists and improves mental health care in Texas.

Meeting Location and Parking: 

The meeting will take place at the AT&T Hotel and Conference Center (1900 University Avenue, Austin, TX 78705). The CAPA meeting room will be on the second floor overlooking the restaurant and is glassed in. Go through the restaurant and take a right to the stairs to the second floor, to Meeting Rooms 1 and 2 or go to the end of the buffet line and then take the elevator to the second floor and the meeting room is right there. You can also access the new meeting rooms 1 and 2 via the "grand stairway” to the second floor and going past the length of the restaurant on the floor below.   

There is a parking garage in the hotel, or you can use metered street parking if you prefer. 

Cancellations: Cancellations must be received no later than 3 business days prior to the event in order for a refund to be processed. Cancellations received after that time will have a refund processed.

Please note online registration will close at 5pm on the Thursday prior to the meeting. In order to expedite certificate distribution following monthly meetings, we request that you pre-pay online no later than noon on the Thursday before the meeting. If you prefer to register by check, please mail your payment to CAPA @ PO Box 1448, Cedar Park, TX 78630 postmarked no later than the Monday prior to the meeting. Those who pre-register as noted will receive expedited PD certificate distribution. On-site registrants will be processed within 7 business days. All PD certificates will be emailed to signed in attendees.
