CAPA February Monthly Meeting

“Sex Therapy 101: The Valentine’s Day Edition”

Presenter: Carey S. Pulverman, PhD

Friday February 14, 2020

12:00 PM – 1:30 PM

1.5 Hours of Professional Development Offered

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:

Join CAPA on Valentine’s Day for a lively presentation on how to incorporate the basics of sex therapy into your general psychology practice. Dr. Pulverman will present a case for incorporating sexual health into your routine intake assessment, and what to do if your patients report sexual difficulties. She will present background and diagnostic information on the male and female sexual dysfunction disorders, the leading models of human sexual function, and treatment techniques to get you started even if you do not regularly treat sexual difficulties. A list of resources for each disorder will be provided for use in your everyday practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Increase participant comfort assessing sexual health concerns among their patients.
  2. Provide a review of the DSM-5 male and female sexual dysfunction disorders.
  3. Present three sex therapy treatment techniques that can be incorporated into a general psychology practice.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Pulverman is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Austin, TX, and a Research Associate at Dell Medical School of the University of Texas at Austin. She received her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin where she trained in the Sexual Psychophysiology Lab, studying the human sexual response, specifically the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and sexual function in adulthood. Dr. Pulverman has published extensively in the field of women’s sexual health. She completed her pre- and postdoctoral clinical training at the Veterans Health Administration where she trained in primary care and inpatient behavioral medicine and empirically supported treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder. During her postdoctoral fellowship, she studied sexual health in women veterans and was the author of a 2019 publication linking Military Sexual Trauma to sexual pain in women veterans. In her private practice she sees individuals and couples for issues including depression, anxiety disorders, adjustment to chronic illness/injury, insomnia, sexual abuse, trauma, sexual dysfunction, and relationship difficulties.
